Do you know of any way to move data from NFS to Ancestry? I'm with you on documenting sources. I wish there were a better partnership between the two systems so we could have the best of all worlds. I recognize that the primary purpose of NFS is to support temple ordinances, but I like to use it as a defacto repository of my genealogy information. Unfortunately, it is not designed for that.

Kevin, this is a great story and practical use for Evernote with genealogy. I think it would be a great article for the FamilySearch TechTips site. Would you be interested in contributing an article like this to TechTips or in becoming a regular author on TechTips? Email me if you are interested(included in the comment).

Hi Kevin, I too, have been utilizing the browsable images on FamilySearch's website, especially the North Carolina and South Carolina wills and probate records. I have written a couple of blog posts about how invaluable these records are. One thing I do like to point out, however, is that many of these records, especially the NC and SC wills, are transcripts or copies of the original wills that were filed with the courts and I have found some errors, so although they are a good starting point for information, one should also get copies of the originals if they can.

I love to go through the "all collections", a good way to view what is newly added also. Some of those non indexed record sets have produced family records for me already....with a lot of reading and looking but so worth the effort and I learn as I go through them too. It can only get better!

The Civil War Soldiers System is a site near and dear to my heart! (I was the coordinator for the entry of the Ohio soldiers.) I'm glad you found it! Definitely explore the regimental histories and the battle summaries. They are excellent resources for putting your Civil War ancestors into context.

I agree with you about "clunkiness" of having to type the source information into NewFamilySearch. But I thought some of the newer gen. programs like RootsMagic were able to upload the sources into newfamilysearch. Am I wrong? I've been typing in the barest minimum when I've added people in NFS.

Thank you for a great article! I've been trying to get the 'hang' of doing this stuff and this post is going to help a lot! Enjoyed it very much, and never thought about taking my family on a virtual tour of an area not now known to us, though I did take a virtual tour of my great-grandmother and grandfather's home area myself. One day, I will take a day trip to see it on person. Once again, Thanks!
