When I was a kid my best friend and I used to go to the movies all the time…especially during the summer. The theater was in a very large outdoor shopping center with lots of big stores around the perimeter, smaller stores sprinkled in between them, and the movie theater right in the middle. It was the newest theater around our area and during the summer we went a lot. I can still remember going in to the candy store just down from the theater to buy all kinds of great junk for much cheaper than you could get it at the movies and then smuggling it in.
One of the best movies I remember seeing there was Brighton Beach Memoirs. As a 13-year-old boy (give or take) it was full of ideas I could identify with. We watched that movie over and over, because in those days the movies didn’t come out for rental 30 days after release. It’s too bad movie tickets are so expensive now. I can’t imagine my own kids going to the movies to see something again and again. Those were fun times for a couple of kids trying to enjoy a summer vacation.
